With summer officially here, and the bathing season underway, we have decided to explore which is the best beach in Gibraltar?

While many Gibraltarians keep faithful to their favourite beach, to the extent that they have their permanent “spot” on the beach, it is unlikely that reading this article would make them switch to another beach. Yet it would give you, the visitor, a good idea of what to expect at each beach. We have examined the different attributes of Gibraltar’s 5 beaches and have marked them from 1 (poor) to 5 (excellent). We then tallied-up the score to reach the final ranking.

The results are below:

1- Poor | 2- Fair  | 3- Average | 4- Good | 5– Excellent

Top 5 Beaches in Gibraltar

Beach General Cleanliness Crowdedness (weekend) Toilet Facilities Natural Beauty Kiosk/Cafe Variety Parking Proximity to Bus Stop The X-Factor
Eastern Beach 4 3 3 2 4 5 4 Disabled facilities
Caleta Beach 4 2 3 4 5 4 5 Shade from around 5pm
Sandy Bay 4 4 3 5 2 1 4 Widest beach; Ideal for water sports
Rosia (Camp Bay) 3 2 4 4 4 3 2 Swimming pools and seating facilities
Western Beach 3 3 3 2 3 4 3 Ideal for plane-spotting!

Final Score:

  • Caleta Beach: 27
  • Eastern Beach: 25
  • Sandy Bay: 23
  • Rosia (Camp Bay): 22
  • Western Beach: 21

And the winner is….Caleta Beach! Be it the ease of accessibility (by both car and bus), the range of cafes and restaurants nearby or just the picturesque setting in the shade of the Rock, Caleta Beach received top scores. In fact, its only main drawback is that it is often overcrowded (particularly on weekends) which is a testimony to its qualities. Indeed, each of Gibraltar’s beaches is unique in its own way, and has a particular “x-factor” which makes it appealing in the eyes of the beach-goers, no matter what score that beach gets.
